Excavator building a gravel driveway through green Ohio farmland

Driveways

Durable driveway construction and grading for rural properties, farms, and residential access.

Overview

A well-built driveway is more than a path to your front door — it’s your property’s first impression and a daily-use surface that needs to hold up through Ohio’s freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rains, and regular traffic. Earthwise Excavating builds driveways that last, with proper grading, drainage, and materials suited to Southwest Ohio conditions.

From long farm lanes in Clinton County to residential drives in Clarksville, we handle new construction, complete rebuilds, and repairs for driveways of all sizes.

What’s Included

  • Route Planning — We evaluate terrain, drainage patterns, and traffic needs to determine the optimal driveway alignment and width.
  • Excavation & Subgrade Prep — We remove topsoil and organic material, then grade and compact the subgrade for a stable foundation.
  • Base Stone Installation — A proper base layer of crushed limestone provides the structural support your driveway needs.
  • Surface Gravel & Crown — We apply and compact surface gravel with a proper crown (center high point) to shed water to both sides.
  • Drainage Features — Culverts, ditches, and turnouts are installed as needed to keep water off your driving surface.

Common Questions About Driveways

What type of gravel is best for a rural driveway in Ohio? +

For Southwest Ohio conditions, we typically recommend a three-layer approach: a base of #4 limestone for stability, a middle layer of #57 stone for drainage, and a top layer of #304 or #411 surface gravel for a smooth, compactable driving surface. The exact materials depend on your traffic load, soil conditions, and budget.

How wide should my driveway be? +

A standard single-lane residential driveway should be at least 10-12 feet wide. If you have regular two-way traffic or need to accommodate larger vehicles like farm equipment or delivery trucks, 14-16 feet is recommended. We'll help you determine the right width based on your daily use and property layout.

How often will a gravel driveway need maintenance? +

A properly built gravel driveway with good drainage and a solid base typically needs minor grading or top-dressing every 2-3 years. Heavy traffic, steep grades, or poor drainage can increase maintenance frequency. The investment in proper initial construction — good base, proper crown, and drainage — dramatically reduces long-term maintenance costs.

Can you fix my existing driveway that washes out every rain? +

Absolutely. Washout problems are almost always caused by inadequate drainage, missing or degraded base material, or improper grading. We'll evaluate your existing driveway, identify the root cause, and often can rebuild or repair it for a fraction of the cost of starting from scratch. Proper crown and drainage ditches are key.
